TikTokers cite a March 2024 video as proof of incinerators at the facility — but the footage wasn’t even shot in Florida.

All over TikTok, users are posting videos claiming that there are now incinerators to burn bodies at Alligator Alcatraz, the controversial detention facility deep in the Florida Everglades.

In one video posted on July 1, which has received 5 million views as of July 15, a woman said government contractors are installing incinerators at Alligator Alcatraz.

"Just in case you don't know what's going on, a girl on TikTok came on here and said that one of her neighbors received a government contract asking them to install a bunch of incinerators at Alligator Alcatraz," the user @ItsTammyTyler said in the video. "They're installing incinerators at Alligator Alcatraz."

Other users have overlaid Tyler's video speaking about the incinerators over a video purportedly showing incinerators at Alligator Alcatraz. However, one woman soon pointed out that the original incinerator video was from March 2024. She discovered that a user named Lance recorded the video from Dawson, Minnesota, and told fellow users that they would be used to burn wood.

"I would like to preface this video by making it very clear that I am in no way a Trump supporter. What is happening in this country is absolutely horrendous, and it deserves outrage, and I want you guys to really understand that this video is not to take away from that," user @iambanenoir explained. "This morning, I saw a video circulating on TikTok making claims that incinerators were going to be placed at Alligator Alcatraz. I started doing a little bit of research and quickly found the original incinerator video from March of 2024."

She noted that this misinformation is taking away from the real issues occurring at the immigration facility.

"There are real tragedies happening every day to immigrants, and claims like this honestly make it feel like they're trying to deter us from what is actually happening," she adds. "Misinformation is a distraction and it hijacks our outrage and gives power to those who thrive on confusion."

Four days after posting her viral video, Tyler clarified that there are no incinerators at Alligator Alcatraz. Her video, however, is still up on her TikTok page. She explained that she saw a TikTok where a woman claimed her neighbor's cousin "had a contracting job to install a 'ton' of incinerators" at the facility.

"So you can't blame me for seeing this and being extremely concerned about people. I care about people a lot, and so it also checks out that, like, I don't know, it just seems like something that is possible on this timeline, and that's extremely alarming to me," she said. "So as of right now, that is not true and they're not installing the incinerators at Alligator Alcatraz."

Detainees held at the sprawling site at the facility say they are living in inhumane conditions and have limited access to their attorneys. A 63-year-old Miami father detained at the facility said detainees had to remove human waste with their hands to use the bathroom after the toilets stopped working. He called the facility a "Hispanic concentration camp."
